A Rosary Meditation … The First Joyful Mystery, the Annunciation. Blessed Pope John Paul II the Great said, “She who, as the one ‘full of grace’ was brought into the mystery of Christ in order to be his Mother and thus the Holy Mother of God, through the Church remains in that mystery as ‘the woman’ spoken of by the Book of Genesis (3:15) at the beginning and by the Apocalypse (12:1) at the end of the history of salvation.” The Annunciation transpired just a little less than 2,000 years ago. The plan of God has existed from eternity. For all of time, and for the eternity that exists apart from the creation of time, in the Mind of God Mary has always been Mother. It didn’t begin at the Annunciation, rather it was revealed to her, to us and all of the Heavenly host at that time. Romans 4:17b. When we were in darkness, suffering pain, feeling lost and abandoned, even then she was our Mother, even without our realizing it. The next time we feel the pressures of living and are surrounded by those things that it is so hard for us to see through or past, lets remember that she is our Mother even then. And that because she is our Mother our Elder Brother, Eternal Head of the Family, is Christ.

Today … St. Attalia was the niece of St. Odilia and a Benedictine Abbess. She became Abbess of St. Stephen’s Convent in Salzburg, Austria. As an abbess she was a spiritual mother to many. Some folks may find that sort of relationship a bit hard to understand. Their mother by birth is easy enough to understand, but a spiritual mother is a different, a foreign, matter. Think of it this way. Your birth mother is your mother by blood ties. Your spiritual mother is your mother by adoption. The tie between the two of you is blood also, but in this case it’s His rather than her’s. Ask St. Attalia, someone who understands real spiritual motherhood, to help you better understand the role of Mary, your Mother, in your life.
