Part 13: The Third Glorious Mystery, the Descent of the Holy Spirit

Part 13 of a 15 part series on the mysteries of the Holy Rosary.

The third glorious mystery: The Descent of the Holy Spirit.

Jesus left. He promised to come again. In the meanwhile He promised to send Another to care for His Church. To comfort and guide. Jesus had also promised to be with His followers always, even til the end of the age. He accomplishes this in two ways. He is present, body, blood, soul and divinity, in the Most Holy Eucharist. In this He is with us all over the world. The other way He remains with  us til the end is by Proxy. He is here via the Holy Spirit. He told His fledgling Church to wait and pray til this Other One should come. And so they did. They prayed earnestly for nine days. This is, by the way, the first “novena” and the basis for that devotion. Nine days. And then it happened. The Holy Spirit came. He filled the Church. He was there, He is there, to give life, to sustain life, to protect, to console, to keep, and to guide. No where am I told that He, the Holy Spirit, came and went. He came and He stayed. He was and He is here with us caring for Holy Mother Church til the end of the age when Jesus comes back. If that’s not true then Jesus lied and Christianity is false. But He didn’t and it’s not. There has never been a time when Jesus, and the Church is the Body of Christ, hasn’t been here with and for us. I know that can be hard to believe sometimes. Someone might well say, “Just look at the condition of the Church! And you still believe God is with her?” Yes, I still believe. It’s no surprise to me when things look bad. Jesus said there would be weeds mixed in with the wheat. Paul talked a lot about false brethren. So did others, Peter, Jude. It was no surprise to them. Why should I be surprised? Folks who are surprised are the ones that miss the most evident miracle. And what is that? It is just this: Its been this way for 2,000 years and the Church still stands. I can trust the Church now just as believers trusted the Apostles way back then. Why? Because it’s not about the weaknesses of men. It’s about the strengths of God made manifest through these weak men. Jesus came, He left, He will come again. In the mean time the Holy Spirit might well be described as the Holy Constant. (An aside here. Mary was there when the Holy Spirit fell. She didn’t really need to be. He had fallen on her nearly 34 years prior.)

Prayer: Mother Mary, please help me always remember that I can trust Holy Mother Church because I can trust God Who dwells in her, keeps her, and guides her.
