Part 1: The First Joyful Mystery, the Annunciation

Part 1 of a 15 part series on the mysteries of the Holy Rosary.

The first joyful mystery: The Annunciation.

The angel Gabriel stands before the Blessed Virgin Mary. He has brought a message from God that is meant just for her. On her answer hinges the fulfilment of Genesis 3:15 and every other messianic prophecy ever given. He tells her plainly that she is to give birth to the long-awaited Messiah. Mary asks how this can be. She asks, not out of doubt but out of faith. She knows that God can and will bring it about but her “How?” is rooted in the knowledge that she has vowed to remain forever virgin. Once the angel has explained to her the how of the matter she gives her answer with confidence. Confidence in God. She says very simply, “Yes.” In so doing she becomes the first to accept Christ, the first to say yes to Him, the first Christian.

Prayer: Mother Mary, please help me always say yes to Jesus.
